Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has hinted that he may drop his presidential ambition in 2027 if a younger and widely acceptable candidate emerges.

Atiku, who is a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated that he is willing to support a more vibrant and youthful candidate under the party.

He made this known in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, where he explained that his interest in the 2027 election is not driven by personal ambition but by the need to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative.

The former vice president encouraged young Nigerians to take an active role in politics, emphasizing that he would give them his full backing if one of them was chosen to run for the highest office.

Atiku also dismissed suggestions that he is desperate for power. According to him, his intention is to liberate Nigeria from the grip of those he said have held the country hostage.

“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” Atiku said.
